Transmission Planning and Integrated Planning

Coordinated planning analyses across generation, transmission, and distribution systems

Research and Development Challenges

Given the transformative changes in the electric power systems across the world, it is imperative to break the silos in decision making processes and think comprehensively about the future state of power systems. EPRI TOP team has developed integrated approaches to assess reliability , resilience as well as ensure affordability of energy for the future power systems. The integrated strategic system planning (ISSP) framework is a pivotal research performed by the TOP team in collaboration with other research areas to link various planning analyses across generation, transmission, and distribution to ensure consistency in input assumptions as well as exchange of relevant output to make more informed decisions.

The team is also working on developing approaches for better coordination between TSO and DSO as the distribution systems evolve with distributed resources, and more controllable loads.
